Ultimate Summer Road Trip Essentials: Snacks, Games, & Happy Travelers
Are you gearing up for an unforgettable summer road trip? Our curated list of Summer Road Trip Must-Haves, complete with engaging Printables, is your ultimate guide to packing smart and ensuring a car full of happy, entertained travelers from start to finish!

The countdown has begun! In just a few days, we’ll be embarking on our annual epic road trip, traveling all the way from central Illinois to the picturesque landscapes of Sheridan, Wyoming. This journey, covering a significant distance, brings together three adults, two lively children, and a 16-hour drive, all leading to ten days of cherished family time and making lasting memories.
This trip isn’t just a vacation; it’s a deeply ingrained tradition we eagerly anticipate every single year. It’s a week-long escape brimming with laughter, exciting adventures, and invaluable moments spent reconnecting with loved ones.
My dad, after a fulfilling career, recently retired to his hometown in Wyoming, the place where he grew up. For the past two decades, our summers have revolved around these annual pilgrimages, spending several weeks there. What makes it truly special is the sheer size of our gathering: my dad is one of four siblings, and every summer, all of them—along with their children and even their grandchildren—converge on this one special house. It’s a lively, bustling affair, and if you’re trying to visualize it, imagine this: eighteen adults and seven children, all sharing a cozy four-bedroom house with just two bathrooms. Sounds chaotic? Perhaps. But not one of us would trade these moments for anything in the world. (Though, a third shower might certainly be a welcome upgrade!)

The Unforgettable Journey: Why We Love Road Tripping
Many people opt to fly, but for us, the road trip itself is an integral part of the adventure. It’s where some of our most legendary family stories originate. Take, for instance, the time we found ourselves playing “human frogger” on I-80 when our car topper unexpectedly flew open, sending all our carefully packed belongings tumbling onto the highway. At that moment, it was anything but funny, a flurry of panic and scrambling. But once everything was safely retrieved and we were back in the car, the sheer absurdity of it all hit us, and we haven’t stopped laughing about it since. These are the moments that truly define our family road trips – the unexpected, the slightly chaotic, and the utterly memorable.
I’ll be frank: the drive through the heartland to Wyoming isn’t always the most visually stunning. Our route typically takes us across the entirety of Iowa, often including a pit stop at the World’s Largest Truck Stop – a quirky landmark in itself. From there, it’s onto South Dakota, where we intentionally bypass the notorious tourist trap of Wall Drug, choosing instead to blaze a trail directly toward the Wyoming border. By the time we finally reach Wyoming, dusk has usually settled, casting long shadows. This is when I hand the wheel over to my husband. His keen eyesight and extensive experience driving in rural areas are invaluable for spotting deer and other wildlife that frequently appear on the roads after dark, ensuring our safe arrival.
This year, our trip coincides with the Fourth of July, which adds an extra layer of excitement. I’m eagerly anticipating the possibility of catching distant fireworks displays illuminating the evening sky against the backdrop of the mountains – a truly spectacular thought to mark our journey.

Mastering the Art of In-Car Entertainment for All Ages
I consider myself incredibly fortunate: my children have always been fantastic travelers. This isn’t entirely luck, though; it’s also a testament to careful planning. Being a “cool mom” in this context means knowing precisely how to pack the right combination of snacks, engaging games, and stimulating activities to keep everyone, kids and adults alike, happily occupied throughout the entire journey. A well-prepared car transforms a long drive into an extended adventure, rather than a test of patience.
The Ultimate Road Trip Snack Haul: A Trip to Walmart
Before any major road trip, a strategic raid on my local Walmart is absolutely essential. My mission: scour the aisles for the perfect selection of road trip snacks designed to delight every member of the family. And where do all great road trip snack hunts begin? The candy aisle, of course!
When it comes to snacking, one universal truth applies to our family: our profound love for chocolate. It’s simply non-negotiable; no road trip feels truly complete without a generous supply. This year, I made a beeline for the 10.5 oz Milka OREO bar – an ideal size for sharing amongst the whole family. If you haven’t tried these, you’re missing out! They feature a delightful layer of crunchy OREO cookies nestled between two luscious layers of rich vanilla creme, all encased in decadent European Milka chocolate. And, because a mom always needs her secret stash, I also snagged a king-size bar, discreetly tucked away in the glove box for those moments when everyone else is happily asleep. (Shhh… don’t tell!)
Cruising a bit further down the aisle, I spotted the ultimate indulgence for my son, husband, and sister: Sour Patch Kids. Without hesitation, the largest bag available went straight into the cart. I have no doubt those will be devoured long before we even cross into South Dakota!

Next up, the salty counterpoint to all that sweetness. As a self-proclaimed “salty + sweet” kind of gal, a good savory snack is crucial. My pick for this trip was a bag of RITZ Crisp&Thins in sea salt – my absolute favorite. I particularly appreciate that they contain 50% less fat per serving than regular potato chips, which allows me to enjoy them throughout the ride without an ounce of guilt. It’s all about finding that perfect balance!

Hydration is key on any long journey, so drinks were next on my list. My son has an unwavering love for A&W® Root Beer, and as a parent, I appreciate that it’s caffeine-free. This means no sugar-fueled bounces off the car walls, nor endless repetitions of the infamous “Are we there yet?” question. I opted for the convenient 8-pack, featuring smaller cans with resealable caps – an absolute necessity when traveling with children who, let’s be honest, are prone to spills. These thoughtful choices make a world of difference.

As I made my way to the checkout, I grabbed some TRIDENT Gum, an indispensable item for my own chewing pleasure. If there’s one thing I always carry with me, it’s gum. It’s my personal road trip necessity – a small, simple pleasure that helps me stay refreshed and focused throughout the drive.

Smart Organization & Engaging Activities for Every Mile
Keeping the car tidy and everything accessible is crucial for a stress-free road trip. My favorite hack involves using shower caddies! I place one by each child’s feet, packed with an array of printable games, coloring books, markers, and their Kindles. This keeps their personal entertainment within easy reach, minimizing arguments and the dreaded “Mom, where’s my…?” questions.
For shared snacks, I utilize a larger caddy placed conveniently in the middle of their seats. This setup ensures that both the kids and the front-seat passenger can easily access snacks, preempting those sudden “hangry” moments that can quickly derail a peaceful drive. Thoughtful organization like this transforms the car environment into a more enjoyable space for everyone.

Beyond our carefully selected snacks, I also create custom printable games specifically designed to entertain us during our 16-hour journey. These games are fantastic for passing the time and never fail to get a laugh from my kids. We absolutely thrive on a little friendly competition, and these activities are something the entire family can genuinely get involved in, fostering connection and fun.
Our Family’s Favorite Car Game: “Name That Tune”
As a family deeply passionate about music, “Name That Tune” is our undisputed road trip champion. The rules are simple, yet the game provides endless entertainment: we play just 3-5 seconds of a song, and the first person to correctly identify it becomes the next DJ. If no one can guess, the current DJ keeps their coveted position until someone successfully “steals” their title. Sometimes, we even keep score, tallying how many times someone holds the DJ position consecutively. For an extra challenge, we’ll ask for the rest of the lyrics, the artist’s name, or even the year the song was released. It’s incredibly engaging and can easily fill hours of driving time! I proudly remain the reigning champion, but I’m always ready for the next challenge. Let the summer games begin!
To help you ignite your own musical battles on the road, I’ve included a printable score card for “Name That Tune” below. Additionally, I’ve prepared a comprehensive “Must-Have Summer Road Trip Car Pack List.” This checklist is invaluable for planning your entire trip, ensuring that everyone has their favorite items and that all essentials are covered, guaranteeing entertainment and comfort no matter how long the drive.
Beyond the Essentials: Enhancing Your Road Trip Experience
While snacks and games are crucial, a truly successful road trip involves a few more considerations to ensure maximum comfort and enjoyment for everyone. Here are some additional tips:
Pre-Trip Vehicle Check
Before hitting the road, always perform a thorough check of your vehicle. Ensure tires are properly inflated (including the spare!), oil and fluid levels are optimal, and brakes are in good condition. A quick check of your wipers and lights can prevent unexpected issues. A well-maintained car is a safe and reliable car, giving you peace of mind on your journey.
Comfort on the Go
Long hours in the car can be tough on the body. Encourage passengers to wear comfortable clothing and bring small pillows or neck rests for napping. Schedule regular stops every few hours to stretch your legs, grab a fresh breath of air, and let the kids burn off some energy. These breaks are vital for maintaining good spirits and focus, especially for the driver.
Emergency Preparedness
Always pack an emergency kit. This should include a first-aid kit, jumper cables, a flashlight with extra batteries, a basic tool kit, a portable phone charger, and a blanket. It’s also wise to have some non-perishable food and water in case of an unexpected delay. Being prepared for the unexpected ensures that minor setbacks don’t turn into major problems.
Digital Delights (and Detox)
While printables and family games are fantastic, modern technology also has its place. Pre-loaded tablets with movies, audiobooks, or educational apps can provide valuable quiet time for kids (and adults!). Don’t forget headphones to maintain peace. However, balance screen time with traditional games and simply looking out the window, encouraging appreciation for the passing scenery.
This is what our Summer Road Trip Must-Haves and Printables look like. What about yours? Are you heading out on a grand adventure this year?
