The holiday season truly begins when the festive melodies fill the air. Around my house, that means Christmas music has been playing on full blast for weeks! My son, sensing the joyous shift, now eagerly asks for holiday tunes the moment he hops into the car after school. While my husband maintains a strict “no Christmas before Thanksgiving” policy – a sentiment I playfully dismiss with a hearty “Bah humbug!” – I believe in embracing the festive spirit whenever it calls. And what better way to celebrate than with delightful, easy-to-make treats like these incredible Puppy Chow Truffles? In fact, they were so good, I had to send the bulk of them with my husband to work just to resist eating every single one myself. Trust me, they are *that* good.

Our Unexpected Peanut Butter Obsession: From Chili to Truffles

If there’s one thing we unequivocally adore in this household, it’s peanut butter. Our love for it recently reached an entirely new level, thanks to our wonderful new neighbors. They invited us over for a casual evening of chili and football, and as I received my bowl of comforting chili, I was also handed a peanut butter sandwich. My initial reaction was pure bewilderment – “What is this combination?” I wondered. Our neighbor, Kayla, then enlightened me: “Oh, you dip your sandwich in the chili!” Still perplexed, I gave it a try. And let me tell you, my mind was absolutely blown. This unconventional pairing is not just “a thing”; it’s a *delicious* thing. Seriously, don’t knock the peanut butter and chili combo until you’ve experienced it for yourself. Since that fateful day, a bowl of chili just doesn’t feel complete without a side of peanut butter goodness. We affectionately call it “an Iowa thing,” though some friends recall it as a school lunch staple. Us “suburb people” might just be a little late to the party, but now you’ve been told!

This newfound appreciation for peanut butter’s versatility inspired me to explore more ways to incorporate it into our lives, especially during the festive season. And that’s where these exquisite Puppy Chow Truffles come in – a testament to the incredible power of a good jar of peanut butter.

Discovering the Magic of Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter

As true peanut butter aficionados, we’ve always had our go-to brands. That was, until I stumbled upon Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter during a trip to Walmart. Growing up, I was an ardent fan of extra crunchy peanut butter. As an adult, my preference shifted to creamy, while my husband remains loyal to the crunchy texture. This often meant juggling two jars in the pantry – a minor inconvenience, but never a bad thing when it comes to having more peanut butter! Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter, however, is truly the best of both worlds. It masterfully combines a smooth, creamy base with just enough finely ground peanuts to provide a delightful, subtle crunch. This unique texture makes it incredibly satisfying and versatile.

To be completely honest, I was initially hesitant to stray from my favorite creamy variety. But the moment that first spoonful of Peter Pan® Simply Ground touched my palate, it was a total game-changer. There was no going back. This peanut butter offers a natural, authentic taste that’s hard to beat. Beyond its superior flavor and texture, it boasts a clean ingredient list – no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Plus, unlike some natural peanut butters, there’s no need for stirring, which is a huge convenience bonus. If that’s not enough to convince you to head to Walmart and grab a jar (you’ll find it on the top shelf of the peanut butter aisle, in my experience), then these delicious Puppy Chow Truffles certainly will!

The Story Behind “Puppy Chow Truffles”: A Taste of Childhood Nostalgia

Naming these delectable peanut butter creations proved to be a delightful challenge. I considered a straightforward name like “peanut butter balls rolled in powdered sugar,” but it sounded a bit bland and uninspired. “Puppy Chow Buckeyes” crossed my mind, but I worried about offending traditional Buckeye fans with such a mashup. Ultimately, I settled on “Puppy Chow Truffles” because that’s precisely what they reminded me of – the classic, beloved snack from my childhood. My mother frequently made Puppy Chow (also known as Muddy Buddies or Monkey Munch) for us as we grew up. You could always count on finding a bag in the freezer, practically begging to be devoured. And oblige I did, every single time!

The ingenious connection between these truffles and the nostalgic snack lies in Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter’s unique texture. Its delightful balance of creaminess with a subtle crunch perfectly mimics the satisfying crunch of cereal in traditional Puppy Chow. Combined with the familiar flavors of peanut butter, chocolate, and a generous dusting of powdered sugar, the “Puppy Chow Truffles” name simply clicked. The best part? This recipe requires only six ingredients and absolutely no baking! That’s three cheers for simplicity, convenience, and utterly delicious results. Just like the peanut butter itself, which is free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, this recipe is wonderfully straightforward. Let me show you how effortlessly they come together.

Crafting Your Puppy Chow Truffles: A Simple, No-Bake Delight

Creating these delightful truffles is a breeze, perfect for even the busiest holiday schedules. The process begins by combining your chosen peanut butter, softened butter, a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors, and a splash of vanilla extract into a mixer. Blend these ingredients until they are beautifully combined and smooth. Next, gradually incorporate the powdered sugar, adding it one cup at a time. This ensures that the sugar is fully integrated into the mixture, preventing a dusty mess and achieving the perfect consistency. Continue mixing until the concoction comes together into a cohesive dough that you can easily form into balls.

Once your peanut butter mixture is ready, it’s time to form the truffles. I find using a large cookie scoop incredibly helpful for creating uniformly sized balls, making them appealing and ensuring even chilling. From this recipe, you should yield approximately 28 truffles. However, fair warning: you might lose a few to eager taste-testers before they even make it to the freezer! (My daughter and I certainly couldn’t resist a couple!) Place your formed peanut butter balls onto a parchment-lined tray and pop them into the freezer for about an hour. This crucial step helps them firm up, making them much easier to dip in chocolate without falling apart.

While your truffles are chilling, prepare your chocolate coating. I prefer melting chocolate in a double boiler; it’s my go-to method for achieving a smooth, evenly melted chocolate without the risk of scorching. For an extra velvety finish and easier dipping, you can add a teaspoon of coconut oil to the melting chocolate. While shortening can also be used, I personally try to minimize its use. For dipping, a wooden skewer is a fantastic tool. Its length provides a much better grip than a toothpick, reducing the chance of a precious truffle taking an unplanned dive into the chocolate. A pro tip: remove the peanut butter balls from the freezer one at a time, dipping each one quickly before placing it back on the parchment paper. This keeps the truffles cold, allowing the chocolate to set faster and preventing the peanut butter from becoming too soft.

After all your delicious balls have been dipped in chocolate, return them to the freezer for another hour. This second chill time ensures the chocolate coating is perfectly set and firm. Once they’re thoroughly chilled, remove them and roll each ball generously in powdered sugar. And just like that, you have a beautiful tray of Homemade Puppy Chow Truffles, ready to share (or secretly devour!). Again, a huge thanks to my husband’s coworkers for helping these disappear from my kitchen; my waistline truly appreciates it! The creamy yet subtly crunchy texture of Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter truly shines through in these truffles, making them utterly addictive. I’m so enamored with this peanut butter that I’ve already bought another jar for everyday delights like sandwiches, toast, and even classic peanut butter cookies. Creamy with a little bit of crunch, Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter works beautifully in these Puppy Chow Truffles. Peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate and rolled in powdered sugar are the perfect treat to pass out to all your friends, family and coworkers this holiday season.

Ingredients

  • 1 jar, 15 ounces, Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar, divided
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil, optional

Instructions

  1. Add your Peter Pan® Simply Ground Peanut Butter, softened butter, salt, and vanilla extract to the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix until thoroughly combined.
  2. Slowly add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, ensuring the first cup is fully incorporated before adding the next. Continue mixing until the mixture forms a workable dough.
  3. Form the peanut butter mixture into uniform balls (a cookie scoop works great here) and place them on a parchment-lined tray. Freeze for 1 hour to firm them up.
  4. In a double boiler (or carefully in the microwave to avoid burning), melt the semi-sweet chocolate. If desired, stir in 1 teaspoon of coconut oil for a smoother consistency.
  5. Remove the chilled peanut butter balls from the freezer one at a time. Using a wooden skewer, dip approximately three-quarters of each peanut butter ball into the melted chocolate mixture.
  6. Place the chocolate-dipped balls back on the parchment paper. Once all balls have been dipped, return the tray to the freezer for another 1 hour to allow the chocolate to set completely.
  7. After 1 hour, remove the truffles from the freezer. Roll each ball generously in the remaining powdered sugar until evenly coated.

Notes

*For easier handling and a better grip when dipping, I recommend using a wooden skewer instead of a toothpick.
